Feature

Taipei Municipal Zhong-zheng Senior High School, formerly the Taipei County Shih-lin Junior High School, was established in 1945 and completed its move to its present location in 1975. One of the largest community high schools in Taipei City, with a campus of approximately 70,000 square meters. “Grand is the atmosphere of this scenic city, grand are the abilities of Zhong-zheng’s people”, is the school’s vision. Providing ample learning resources and space, with the desire to cultivate students’ literacy in the grandeur of the humanities, arts and sciences, while at the same time nourishing independent learning, public participation, problem solving and other abilities to adapt to the future.

In addition to diverse learning opportunities, Zhong-zheng Senior High utilizes mutually accommodating curriculum shaping perspectives in the development of its school-based programs of study which are deeply rooted in the foundational abilities of those disciplines. At the same time, the school focuses on the subjects and purposes of the courses, developing a student-centered literacy-oriented pedagogy. The close interaction between the school and students educates students in the implementation of participatory decision-making leadership abilities while gathering societal resources and models which in turn broaden the school’s teaching and learning horizons.

Looking ahead to future soft power, Zhong-zheng Senior High will integrate the surrounding natural environment into the curricula. Near Zhong-zheng Senior High there are many Qilian stones. Owing to their extreme hardness, early on there were no small number of residents who would take them for building houses. However, with the passage of time, most of the houses built with Qilian stones were all torn down. All that remained were some scattered rocks. Teachers and their students brought those rocks back and placed them in the campus’s literature and history instructional area. These artifacts, left to be forgotten, along with their history in the community, received another form in which to be preserved. In addition to building materials for older-style homes, teachers and students were also committed to restoring the water channels near the campus.

The relationships between people and the land is an important concept to bring to students. If a city wants to realize sustainable development, it will need to balance basic engineering, economic development, and the sentiment of the residents. The SDG11 summit has already been held on campus for 2 years. Issues concerning social justice in the community and compensation were all taken up at the summit for discussion and study.

Zhong-zheng Senior High offers a multitude of diverse electives to deepen and broaden the curriculum, to provoke, explore, collect data, imagine, and connect previous learning experiences as the keys to commence learning. Cooperative learning, learning by doing, field surveys, sharing and reflective learning are all the school’s expansion of student horizons, connecting with past cultures, critical elements in developing of new ideas.

Surpassing traditional strengths in environmental science research is a curriculum Zhong-zheng faculty are committed to promoting. On campus there are Taiwan native species ecological ponds, rainwater collection, sewage purification, and solar energy systems for the physical practice of energy conservation, sustainable development, and maintenance of biodiversity concepts. This research emphasizes students’ ability to perceive problems, consider solution strategies and try out ability development, cultivating the use of mathematical analysis, engineering concepts, language expression, humanities and arts for the consolidation and internalization of conservation learning demonstrating specific STEAM skills. To cultivate students’ STEAM literacy, the campus has AI courses.

Zhong-zheng Senior High School along with National Taipei University of Technology, and Siemens industry-university-research institute jointly set up the AI curriculum, adding in units such as mathematics, artificial intelligence, and future computational thinking.

In the summer break before students are to become seniors, they will have a special research achievements exhibition, presenting the results of their research projects which they have spent an entire year on. Passing the assessments, students will receive course certificates issued jointly from the three institutes. For students, this is not only a kind of affirmation but also a self-procured chorography of future competition.

For deepening international mobility in correspondence with the 2030 national bilingual policy, Zhong-zheng Senior High School established a bilingual experimental class in the hope that students would naturally utilize English in a variety of subject courses. The bilingual experimental class has many cooperative classes with Australian schools, including marine recreation and ecological field study, global mobility and sounds of the city. These courses are collaborative taught by teachers from different subjects in the English language and integrated into civic literacy courses, focusing on United Nations sustainable development goals (SDGS), caring for the community, identify with the country along with connecting internationally, students experience differences in perspectives from different cultures, enabling them to understand global culture and local identity issues under globalization.

The bilingual experimental class is not only learning language but also how to employ language as a tool to develop local, social, national, and global levels of multiple citizenship awareness, establishing an emphasis on human rights, an affirmation of diversity and a sense of responsibility for the respect for cultural learning and international understanding. Furthermore, the class offers different international learning experiences to guide students’ career development.

In addition to the bilingual experimental class, the school supports the International Foundation Year and Joint Diploma Program. Students are selected to obtain the qualifications in order to take part in these two programs, and graduate with two high school diplomas, one from Zhong-zheng Senior High School and one from the international cooperating school.

The programs will provide students with multiple types of cultural vision and will also be able to bring forth new thinking. Maturity begins from knowing oneself. It allows students to explore who they are, to know what kind of person they are, what kind of person they want to grow up as. Students should bravely face knowing themselves, not fearing being different from others, being comfortable in orchestrating their own strengths, becoming a positive and optimistic life-long learner.
