Teaching Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Collaboration with Swedish Vasaskolan II

ZZSH and Sweden's Vasaskolan High School have been conducting a series of collaborative courses for SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). The central theme of the second class is SDGs 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, taught by Swedish teacher Peter Perskull. Water resources are closely related to economic growth and sustainable development of the environment. However, over-exploitation, environmental pollution and climate change have led to severe global water scarcity, especially in most parts of Africa, which are facing economic water scarcity. That means people are not able to obtain clean water. Therefore, protecting and restoring water resource ecosystems, and assisting developing countries to establish clean water and sanitation facilities are important goals at present.

【Examples of maintaining and increasing water resources】

"Restoration of forest wetlands in Sweden" - Restoration of wetlands that were previously used for agriculture or forestry can improve water quality since wetlands act as natural surface water purification facilities. Additionally, restoring wetlands can also reduce carbon emissions and help mitigate climate change.

"Rehabilitation of Taiwan's urban rivers" - Urban river restoration not only improves water quality but also enhances the quality of life for people living near the water and the adjacent sea area. Economically, it can also increase housing prices in the city.
"Global desalination of seawater" – Desalination of seawater is a very energy-intensive means of water purification. However, this problem can be solved by using solar energy.

After the lecture, Peter posed six questions for students to divide into 16 groups for online discussion, covering water resources and the marine environment. Students from Sweden and Taiwan will use Padlet to interact and upload discussions in the following month to prepare for the next course.
